Board Game Celebration

Just a few pictures from our board game sun band celebration today!

And a few pictures from the assembly a few weeks ago that I forgot to post! Oops! Each group presented a different skit that represented one level on our "Size of Your Problem" chart. Mrs. Cate then asked the audience to guess what level problem the group was acting out! They did a fantastic job! Especially on short notice...

Weather Data Collection

Today we started to collect data for our weather projects! Each group was assigned a city around the world and had to record the average high temperature, average low temperature, and average rainfall for four months in the year. We will use this data to make some graphs and decide what the climate is in specific regions around the world. We will also be looking at the types of extreme weather that occurs around the world.

Weather Videoconference

Today we had our first videoconference of the year! We got to learn about Wild and Wacky Weather from a museum in Texas. Ask your child about some of the fun facts we learned! Thanks to Mr. Davidson for helping us out today!

Weather and Size Of My Problem

We started a new weather unit this week! We started by listing ideas we already have about weather. Then we recorded many of the questions and wonderings we have about weather and natural hazards!  We will be learning about forecasting weather, climates around the world and different natural hazards.

You may have been hearing about this new poster in our classroom. This poster helps us understand how big our problems are and making sure that our solution matches the size of our problem. Last week, we practiced figuring out the size of our problems! For example we realized that a broken pencil would be a level 1 problem which is something we can solve on our own!

Crooked Swing Experiment

Today we wrapped up our first science unit on forces and interactions. We used our knowledge about pendulums to help us make a crooked swing go back and forth in a straight path. Many groups had great thoughts about how to remedy this situation, but so far we have found no solutions! I know many kids went home today thinking about what might make it swing straight! Ask your child what they tried today! And no...you can't just put it on a straight tree branch :)

We will be moving into a weather unit...more details to come about some exciting projects we have planned!

Graphing and Informational Texts

We are about to wrap up Unit 2 in our Bridges math curriculum. During the last part of the unit, we have been focusing on graphing data with bar graphs and pictographs. The third graders have discovered that a lot goes into making a graph! Today, we focused on making our graphs neat and precise. Our graphs need to have a category label, a scale with label, a key, and a title. Fractions have been coming into our graphing work as well. The pictures we were using to represent our votes had to represent 3 kids each! When a category only had 5 votes we had to figure to how to cut the picture to represent only 2 kids!

You can check out our finished graphs outside our classroom on the bulletin board!

We also started looking at informational texts during reader's workshop. Today we noticed how informational texts are different from fiction books! This can be a great opportunity to start reading some informational texts at home!
