Four Winds

Thanks to Jon (Sam's dad) and Michael (Van's dad) who came into volunteer for Four Winds today!

Today in Four Winds we learned about seed dispersal. First, we started with a puppet show that taught us different ways that seeds can travel!

Then we got to check out some different types of seeds.

After we went outside and observed how milkweed seeds spread! We loved chasing them around the field!

Even catching them on our faces...

Lastly, we checked out what happened to a seed in the compost! When a seed has the right conditions amazing things can happen!

Spaghetti Dinner and Bookfair:
The Spaghetti Dinner and Bookfair were a great success on Tuesday.  We enjoyed coming together as a community.  Thank you to our PTO volunteers and Summit Street staff that made this event successful.   Thank you to all of our families that took time to come out and enjoy a meal together, and thank you for your patience and flexibility when the line was long. We hope it gave you a chance to meet someone new!

PTO Meeting:
Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday November 8th at 6:30 pm!  There will be babysitting available.

We had an assembly this morning! We got to surprise Mrs. Gruendling for National Principals Month! Each classroom shared a few things we love about her!

We also learned about railroad safety thanks to a guest speaker from Vermont Railway. We learned a lot of interesting facts about trains and tracks.

During writing, we had the opportunity to work on some spooky stories to share on Monday!

Thanks and Some Updates

At this time, I have had the opportunity to meet with all families to share all the great things your third graders are doing every day at school! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to come into school and see the amazing progress your children are making!

As always, if anything comes up, please feel free to call or email me!

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the spaghetti dinner/book fair last night!

A couple of housekeeping items:

The third graders have filled our sunband jar again and have voted for pajama day on Friday. They can wear pajamas to school on Friday. I did explain to them that we have P.E. and the Fun Run, so to choose pajamas that will allow for those activities.

Literacy: We are just finishing up our first reading unit about Building a Reading Life. We will be transitioning into a new informational text unit starting next week. I'm sure you will be hearing lots of interesting new facts at home soon! To connect with our reading unit, we will also be starting an informational writing unit. Third graders will have a chance to write about a topic they are an expert on!

Math: We are in the middle of our second unit which focuses on multiplication. I have been amazed by the creative and efficient strategies the third graders come up with!

Science: In November and December, we will be starting to learn about weather, different climates and natural hazards!

Thank You!

Thank you to all the families that helped your children put together a lovely surprise party today. I was reminded of how thoughtful children can be, and how lucky they are to have families that have helped them become so amazing! There was a lot of planning and consideration that went into this celebration! (Notice the juice boxes spelling out Ms. P and a smiley face!) I'm not sure who was more excited to celebrate my birthday -the kids or me!

Thanks again!

Bridges Unit 2: Introduction to Multiplication

Today we started the second unit in Bridges! We are so excited about our introduction to Multiplication. I have included the family letter for this unit so you know what we will be focusing on.

The first lesson had us looking a picture of a pet store to find groups of items! I had a hard time pulling the third graders away from this when it was time to clean up. They did an amazing job finding groups of items to multiply.
