Audubon Field Trip

Some pictures to share from our Audubon trip today!

We started out by playing a relay race as a whole group! We had to decide whether the item they gave us came from tree or not! We have a very competitive group :)

Then we broke off into groups. First, we "met" a tree and learned about the characteristics.

Then we learned how to identify trees by their leaves.

Last, we learned how to measure how tall a tree is from the ground with some cool measuring instruments.

I just had to share this picture from indoor recess :)

Four Winds

Reminder: Tomorrow (Tuesday) is our Audubon field trip. We will be going as long as it is not thundering or lightning. We will BE going in the rain. Please dress accordingly, and send your child with a change of footwear for when we get back to school!

Today we had our first Four Winds! Thanks to Erika, Aricha and Beth for coming to teach us about shadows and the sun today! We started with the puppet show about the sun's location in the sky. We talked about how the Earth is revolving around the sun and depending on its location, we have a different time of day.

Then we got to try out making shadows with flashlights and wooden blocks!

Lastly, we got to go outside and trace our shadows with a partner!

Friday Fun!

Today was a big day at Summit Street School! We had a surprise celebration for filling the sun band jar. We all got new yellow shirts!

Of course we had to take a silly picture...

We got to sing at the grand opening of the new office space! Some of the third graders got to help with the ribbon cutting!

Reminders

Just a few reminders:

Friday 9/25 at 10:45am we will be singing the Summit Street School song in front of the school to celebrate the opening of the new office, then we will have the End of Summer BBQ lunch.

Tuesday 9/29 is our field trip to Audubon. At this point our class does not have any chaperones. If you are free and would like to join us, we would love your company on Tuesday morning! Let me know if anyone is interested!

Thanks!

Addition Strategies

Today in math we talked more about using different strategies to solve double-digit addition problems. We were able to share out different strategies students in our classroom used to solve the same problem. Some strategies we have been using are:

-open number line
-breaking apart for place value (adding the tens and the ones)
-traditional algorithm

And as you can see, even within a strategy, there are multiple ways to solve the problem. The most important thing to consider when choosing a strategy is if it will be efficient and accurate. We talk a lot about how counting by 1s would get us the answer, but it is not an efficient strategy.

We have also been adding some algebra into our third grade math! We have been talking about how we can use a letter in our equations when it is an unknown value. For example, the equation we came up with for this story problem was 34 + 17 = m (m stood for number of marbles).
