Reading!

Hope you are all having a restful and relaxing break! I can't wait to hear about all the AMAZING reading you are doing over vacation!

Remember to be reading each day! Read to a friend. Read to a stuffy. Read to a sibling. Read to a parent. Read to a pet. Read to yourself! READ, READ, READ!!!

I also have some pictures from the weeks before break that didn't make it to the blog yet!

Celebrating some extra gym time with Mrs. Hutton!

Other uses for the recyclable materials:

We got together as a whole third grade and read Snowmen at Night. Then we made pictures that show what we think snowmen do at night! They can be found in the staircase by the office!

Weather Testing

Thank you to all the families that joined us this morning for the extreme weather structure testing! Seems like an event that we will definitely want to continue doing in the future! In the midst of all the excitement none of the third grade teachers were able to take any photos. If you (or someone you know) took any pictures of the event, we would love to see them! Send them our way!

Thanks!

Dictionaries

Thanks to Blue Spruce Grange, all Summit third graders got new dictionaries! Today we opened our new dictionaries and started to write thank you cards! We were very excited!

Tomorrow (Tuesday, December 20th) from 9:45-10:45 we will be completing our extreme weather testing in the gym! You are welcome to join us!

Arts Integration

*Reports Cards should be in Friday Folders today!

We had arts integration again today! We got to start designing and building structures to withstand a natural disaster out of recyclable materials!

Groups started by sketching a plan:

Then they started building:

Stay tuned....next Friday we will finish building. Tuesday December 20th, we will actually be testing our structures against the natural disasters!

Standard Algorithm

Quick picture from Tuesday! Mr. Davidson taught us how to use the green screen. Next week students will be walking over to Fleming to use the green screen to record their own weather segment.

We are at the end of our first multi-digit addition and subtraction. Today we learned the standard algorithm (line up and add up the places) for addition. We used the base ten pieces to help us understand what we are actually doing when we add using the standard algorithm.

Some wonderful things I overheard:
"Wait...I finally get this."
"Ohhhh, that's what we were doing!"
"I GET IT!"

We will be exploring the subtraction algorithm in a few days! Hopefully I will hear the same expressions of understanding!

Some Notes

Hello Families!

Just some updates for the coming weeks!

And a link to some math strategies! Some families have been looking for more information about the models we use in Bridges. Click here for a link that shows how we use different models to represent our thinking:

On Friday (December 9th), we will be having our first building session during our arts integration time. Each group will be designing a housing structure to withstand a different natural hazard. Our time is from 8:30-9:30. If you have filled out the volunteer form and would like to join us, we would love your company!

December 9th: Report Cards Go Home

December 15th: Holiday Lunch (Third Grade 11:00-11:30)

December 20th: Weather Structure Testing (9:45-10:45) in the gym

December 22nd: Holiday Sing Along 1pm

If you are able to help, the PTO is asking our class to contribute shampoo to the Break Box collection.

Friday Fun!

This morning we walked to the Heavenly Pantry with our Kindergarten buddies!

We learned all about the food shelf and how they serve people in Essex Junction, Essex Town and Westford. Our students had great questions! I could tell they really understood the purpose of the food shelf.

This afternoon we had our first arts integration time with Mrs. Foley! We worked on making maps and weather symbols that will be the background of our green screen work in the coming weeks!

Have a great weekend!

Weather Graphing

Just a quick picture of our work from our latest subtraction forum...some different strategies for solving subtraction on a number line! Also check out the addition and subtraction equations in the corner! We know we can answer a subtraction equation using addition if we choose that strategy!

After we collected our weather data, we worked on graphing it!

Board Game Celebration

Just a few pictures from our board game sun band celebration today!

And a few pictures from the assembly a few weeks ago that I forgot to post! Oops! Each group presented a different skit that represented one level on our "Size of Your Problem" chart. Mrs. Cate then asked the audience to guess what level problem the group was acting out! They did a fantastic job! Especially on short notice...
