Addition Strategies
Today in math we talked more about using different strategies to solve double-digit addition problems. We were able to share out different strategies students in our classroom used to solve the same problem. Some strategies we have been using are:
-open number line
-breaking apart for place value (adding the tens and the ones)
-traditional algorithm
And as you can see, even within a strategy, there are multiple ways to solve the problem. The most important thing to consider when choosing a strategy is if it will be efficient and accurate. We talk a lot about how counting by 1s would get us the answer, but it is not an efficient strategy.
We have also been adding some algebra into our third grade math! We have been talking about how we can use a letter in our equations when it is an unknown value. For example, the equation we came up with for this story problem was 34 + 17 = m (m stood for number of marbles).
