Arrays and Snow Fun

Today we revisited arrays in math as a strategy for multiplication and division. We learned how to use the linear units (small red pieces) to make the outline of the array, so we could fill it in with the tiles.

Lots of fun playing in the snow at recess!

We always love Stuffies Day as a celebration!

Beanstalks and Book Clubs

We finished our exploration of measurement and fractions and are moving into Unit 5 in Bridges which will focus on the relationship between multiplication and division. Check out our finished beanstalks and the Unit 5 family letter!

In Reader's Workshop, we started book clubs this week. Students are in groups of four or five students all reading the same book. Each day they meet and decide how many pages they will read, then they spend some time reading, and finally they meet as a group to discuss their book. I have been so impressed with how well they are managing this very student directed activity!

Four Winds

Some pictures from today's Four Winds lesson about air! First we watched a puppet show and learned the different ways plants and animals absorb air. Next, we got to rotate through several stations to learn about some of the properties of air!

Art Integration

Today we had our second art integration session with Mrs. Foley! Mrs. Duggan in the library has helped each third grader select a country they want to find out more about and provided them with a book to help with that research. The third graders are currently working on illustrating an image to accompany their research in a class book we will publish. Last week, Mrs. Foley taught us how to use a sketch book app. Today the third graders got to start sketching using the app! Can't wait to share the finished product in a few weeks!

Reading Celebration

Excitement is building for the lantern parade on February 12th! They are looking for a range of volunteers. If you are planning on attending the parade and are interested in helping out visit the link to below to find out more:

Today we got to celebrate as a whole school for all the great reading work we did over Winter Break! Our Kindergarten buddies joined us for ice cream in our pajamas! What could be more fun?!

Fraction and Measurement Fun

*Tomorrow is Pajama Day! We are celebrating all of our hard work reading over break at Summit!

In math, we are about to wrap up our fourth unit. We are ending with a three day measurement and fraction exploration using beanstalks! Today third graders worked with a partner to draw and color a beanstalk that will provide us various measurements to explore. So far, we have measured the height in inches, as well as each leaf on our beanstalk to the nearest quarter inch! I was so impressed with the focus and teamwork the three graders demonstrated today!

We have also been discussing fractions in our unit, as well as in Number Corner. We have been thinking about ordering fractions from greatest to smallest. Most recently we have been talking about fractions on a number line and finding equivalent fractions. Ask your child if they can name some fractions equivalent to 1/2! Or to name some of the locations Freddie the Fraction Frog was hiding on our number line!
