Fractions!

We have a lot to celebrate in third grade this week! Hopefully your children have come home and shared how amazing their learning and thinking has been the last few days! I have commented on how this group has been showing me they are so ready for 4th grade! 

We are in the middle of Unit 7 in Bridges which is all about multiplication, division, and fractions! We have just learned about how to use egg cartons to help us understand fractions. Ask your child about the work we have been doing using the egg cartons! 

Some questions to ask: How do you use the yarn to create equal parts? 

How do you know what the denominator is? Or the numerator?

Did you find any equivalent fractions? 

Even with all the amazing learning, we found a few minutes for some choice time! By request...a photos of some great teamwork!

Housekeeping

Reminder: We will be walking to the high school tomorrow to see Frozen. We will leave around 12:45 and return by the end of the day.

Friday is Student Led Conferences. Please email me or send a note if you are unsure of your appointment time.

We will be starting end of year assessments next week! This is always an exciting time to celebrate all the growth this year!

Information about the 3rd Grade Talent Show will be coming home in Friday Folders tomorrow!

Ice Cream, Four Winds, and Gardening

Thanks to Mrs. Gruendling for spoiling us with ice cream from Sam's Scoop Shop on Thursday to celebrate the end of SBAC testing!!! Yum!

We learned all about bird calls during Four Winds on Friday! 

On Friday, kids in the Gardening Club helped plant lots of different plants in the garden!

Audubon Field Trip

Today we enjoyed a field trip to the Audubon Center in Huntington. We learned all about the water cycle and aquatic creatures!

Our group started down by the brook looking for aquatic creatures! We also tested the water temperature and pH level of the creek. It was pretty cold! About 44 degrees! 

Then we learned all about the water cycle and where water can sometimes get stuck. We learned that water can get "trapped" in a glacier for a long time. We made bead bracelets to symbolize the different places water can get stuck. 

One of our last stops was seeing how different soil types carry water in a relay race! 

Guest Speakers

Reminder: We are headed to the Audubon Center on Tuesday (rain or shine) and SBAC math testing will be Wednesday and Thursday! 

We were lucky enough to have two special guest speakers this week! Yesterday, Thalia's dad talked to the whole third grade about folklore and fairy tales! He even told us his own version of the Three Little Pigs that was quite a hit!

Today we had Amy from the Montshire Museum come to teach us all about fossils! She taught us a little bit about what makes a fossil, then we got to check out a bunch of different fossils that she brought with her! Finally, we got to make our own "fossil" using a shell, clay, and Plaster of Paris! We had a lot of fun guessing what the different fossils might be! In Friday Folders was a coupon for a free child admission to the museum! Might be a fun summer activity!
