Research Clubs

Hope everyone is enjoying our icy and snowy day off! Yesterday we started our new unit in Reader's Workshop: Nonfiction Research Clubs! We will be working in groups to become experts on one topic! We started yesterday by organizing our books from easiest to hardest. Then we read the easiest book to give us an overview on our topic. Next, we selected one subtopic to read about in many different books and take notes! Ask your child which topic they will be studying for the first round of research clubs.

Be sure to do some reading today!

Four Winds and Chess

On Friday we had Four Winds! We learned all about animals in winter! We discovered that animals can either hibernate, be active, be dormant or migrate during the winter. It started with a puppet show that showed how different animals cope with winter! In the end we worked in groups to come up with skits that modeled different animals' winter survival skills.

We also had chess for the first time this year! Mr. Mills came in to introduce our chess procedures and remind us of some concepts we already learned about chess. We loved this time and are excited to have this opportunity every Friday for the rest of the year!

Weather Maps

The third graders have finished up their study of weather and climate! Part of our unit was collecting data on temperature and precipitation around the world. Feel free to explore the weather maps we made below!

Some directions: If you click the arrow in the top left corner it will allow you to change some of the options.

Clicking the red arrows will allow you to add and take away layers.

The top map is average maximum temperature and average minimum temperature. The bottom map is average precipitation.

Enjoy!

Exploring Maps!

We have started our mapping and culture unit in Social Studies! Today we got to check out different types of maps. We wrote down what we noticed and what we were still wondering! They loved looking at maps! We had to spread out all over the place to fit these giant maps! In our discussion after, we learned that the Vatican is the smallest country in the world at only 0.44 km squared! We were wondering how that compares to Summit Street School!

Welcome back! Happy New Year!

Welcome back! We had a great first day back from break! We learned about metric vs. US customary
measurement. We made some goals for the new year and these fun hats! This week we are reviewing and practicing different routines to get ourselves ready for lots of productive learning!

At the end of the day, the third graders used their persuasion skills to convince me to go on a quick parade around the school to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
