Updates (Field Trip Tomorrow)

Please remember we have our trip to Maple Street Park tomorrow! Everyone needs a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, a water bottle and lunch/snacks. If you come dressed in your bathing suit, please send an extra change of clothes and underwear to change into after swimming.

On Friday is our school musical performance at Fleming at 1:30. Third graders need to be dressed in black, blue, white and green. They also need a bandana for one of their dances.

We had some 4th grade visitors from Fleming come to our classroom today and answer more questions about what 4th grade is like! Remember there will be a parent night at Fleming on June 8th.

Array Posters and Penpals

Some housekeeping: Remember NO SCHOOL tomorrow for student led conferences! They cannot wait to share all of their hard work.

Friday (5/20) I will be out and Mrs. Macmillan will be their guest teacher! I am going to watch my brother graduate college in Connecticut!

The current unit in math has been focusing on using arrays as a model to solve multiplication problems. The first step is to build a "skeleton" using the linear units (little blue pieces) to layout the dimensions of the problem you are trying to solve. Once you have done that you can fill in with the base ten pieces to come up with a product.

We have had a lot of practice building the dimensions, then filling in with the base ten pieces. The last two days partners were assigned a specific multiplication problem and they had to make a poster showing the matching array and the different equations that helped them come up with a product!

On Monday, our penpals from Hiawatha came over to play!

Zones of Regulation

On Friday, Ms. Wageman (now Mrs. Cate) spent time making zone meters with our class during Guidance. Zones of Regulation is a systematic, cognitive behavior approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete zones. The curriculum also provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of, and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, managing their sensory needs and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts.

Their zone meter shows which zone they are in, and on the back it provides different tools to help them get back into the green zone. They have had many conversations this year around the idea that different kids need different tools and strategies to help them get from one zone to another. They were taking some time to reflect on what would help them get to the green zone. It also lists the triggers that may take them out of the green zone. Again, these triggers can be different for different kids! This program ties in nicely with the read aloud, Inside Out, we have just finished.

Good bye!

Today we finished up SBAC testing for this year! Yay! We also said goodbye to Ms. G who has been working in our classroom since the fall. She joined us for our math block and writer's workshop. We know she is excited to be back with her family in Canada but we will miss her!
