Four Winds and Word Study

We had Four Winds this morning and learned all about erosion! We started with a puppet show and learned some of the different ways that boulders and rocks erode. Then we moved into three different stations to explore some of the ways things erode.

At one station, we used different amounts of air/wind to see the amount of erosion they could cause.

At another station, we saw how fast moving water could erode rocks.

At the last station, we saw the impact of different amounts of rain.

After we went outside and tested our new knowledge to try and prevent erosion on a mountain of soil.

The one all the way on the left was the control bucket.

Thank you to Aricha, Erika and Keelin for coming in to help this month!

Word Study:

We have been moving along with word study in third grade! I wanted to take a moment to explain what a two week rotation of word study looks like!

Monday: Introduce new words, cut out words and sort
Wednesday: Sort and write on sort worksheet
Thursday: Finish sort worksheet, write 5 sentences, and word study fun choice
Monday: Either phoneme-grapheme mapping or Greek and Latin root work
Wednesday: Partner sort/practice for check in
Thursday: Word study check in

Spaghetti Dinner, Arrays and October Number Corner!

Reminder: The PTO's spaghetti dinner is this Friday night! It runs from 5:00-7:00 and the Scholastic Book Fair will be open for shopping during this time. I hope to see many of you there!

The PTO is still looking for donations and help for Friday night: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b44ada828a4f85-spaghetti

Today we did a project during our math block. We have been working hard thinking about arrays and how they help us understand the connection between addition and multiplication. We had to make a picture using only arrays. At the end we figured out how many total square units were in our picture, using our knowledge of multiplications and arrays to help.

Look at the wide range of pictures! We had Pikachu, Adam's name, a drum set, some city skylines, some houses, some people and a Minecraft character!

In Number Corner this month, we have been collecting two things! We have been pouring 250ml of water into a liter bottle for each day of the month, as well as collecting information about two dimensional shapes on our calendar grid. Students have been asked to predict how many liter bottles will be filled by the end of the month! We had some great guesses! Measurement is a perfect thing to talk about at home, particularly when you are cooking and baking!

Fun Run Volunteers!

Mrs. Hutton is looking for volunteers for our class for the Fun Run on October 30th from 1:00-1:30. If you are available to help, please follow the link to sign up:

Tree Project

To finish up our tree unit, all the third graders are working on a culminating project. They had a choice between working on a poster or writing a letter. Some third graders chose to work with a partner, others chose to work independently. From what I saw on their drafts this morning, they know a lot about trees!

Cube Trains and Multiples Strips

We did some great exploration in math today! We have been talking about multiplication, which is very closely related with addition. We have been doing lots of skip counting and recording multiples of different numbers. After recording multiples of different numbers we have been looking for patterns and structure!

Today each group was assigned a different number and they were asked to build a cube train modeling the multiples of that number. After they built their cube train, they used it to make a multiples strip using adding machine tape. This helped us quickly figure how many cubes would be in a certain number of groups for that multiple. For example, they would know that 6 groups of 4 would be 24 because on the 4's multiple strip if you counted over six times it would be 24!

I wish I had snapped a picture of the final multiples strips all lined up! The kids made some really interesting observations!

Busy Day!!!

We had a busy day in third grade today! My guess would be you will have some tired kids this evening! First off, it was "stuffies" day which was exciting enough on its own! They were so responsible and respectful with their stuffed animals! I wish I had gotten a picture!

We started the morning with a Fire Prevention Assembly. An Essex Junction firefighter named Firefighter Gragg came and talked to our school about fire prevention. He also showed us what he looked and sounded like with his fire equipment on.

Mrs. Gruendling asked our class to make a thank you card for the fireman that came to speak to us this morning! Then we got to deliver it! They weren't there so we left it for them to find later! As you can tell it was quite sunny this afternoon!

Then we got to read with our Kindergarten buddies!

Have a nice long weekend! Looking forward to meeting with more families tomorrow! Thanks to those of you who have already come in!
